  Biography

Prof. Jayant K. Singh was born in 1975 in the village of Gunjadihri, located in Buxar district, Bihar, India. He grew up in an environment shaped by discipline, scientific curiosity, and quiet perseverance. His father, a veterinary doctor who later led the artificial insemination program at Indian Veterinary Research Institute to notable commercial success, played a defining role in instilling the value of innovation and scientific thinking. His mother, Ms. Sheela Singh, a homemaker, provided unwavering support and stability throughout his formative years.

Prof. Singh spent his early years across several towns in India, including Buxar, Jowai, Agartala, Shillong, and Bareilly — experiences that exposed him to diverse cultures and educational environments. He later joined Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, where he pursued his undergraduate studies in Chemical Engineering, graduating with a B.Tech. degree in 1997.

During his undergraduate years, his interest in programming was sparked by a foundational course taught by Prof. Rajat Moona. Guided also by Prof. Ashutosh Sharma, he undertook an early research project that led to his first publication. This formative experience strengthened his inclination toward interdisciplinary research, motivating him to pursue training that combined chemical engineering with computational sciences. He subsequently enrolled at University at Buffalo, where he simultaneously pursued graduate studies in Chemical and Biological Engineering, and Computer Science and Engineering.

At SUNY Buffalo, Prof. Singh worked under the guidance of Prof. Bharat Jayaraman for his M.S. in Computer Science and Engineering, and Prof. David A. Kofke for his Ph.D in Chemical and Biological Engineering. His doctoral research laid the foundation for integrating advanced computational techniques with molecular simulation methods, particularly for evaluating thermophysical properties. This interdisciplinary approach would later define his academic and research trajectory. He received his M.S. degree in 2002 and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering in 2004.

Following a brief stint at General Motors Research and Development, Prof. Singh joined IIT Kanpur as a faculty member in the Department of Chemical Engineering.

  Entrepreneurial & Translational Impact

Prescience Insilico
Bangalore, India · Founded 2019

In 2019, Prof. Singh co-founded Prescience Insilico with Dr. Sudip Roy, driven by a vision to accelerate industrial R&D through digital technologies integrating physics- and chemistry-based modeling of materials and molecules.

Initially incubated at IIT Kanpur, the company later expanded to Bangalore as operations scaled. Prescience Insilico develops solutions for industries such as pharmaceuticals and FMCG, enabling faster, more efficient, and cost-effective innovation. Prof. Singh currently serves as Chairman of the Board and continues to guide the company as an advisor and consultant.

Scanxt — Bhu-Parikshak
Noida, India · Invented 2020

In 2020, Prof. Singh invented Bhu-Parikshak, a handheld soil sensing device designed to address the challenges of soil testing in India. The technology is commercialized by Scanxt.

Bhu-Parikshak enables rapid assessment of soil nutrient content and provides actionable recommendations for crop and fertilizer selection. Over the past several years, the technology has benefited lakhs of farmers, with reported savings exceeding ₹10,000 per hectare. The device is now marketed in multiple countries, reflecting its growing global relevance. Prof. Singh serves as an advisor to the company.
